KNOW YOUR W-H-Y!  

Know why you want to quit smoking.  Dig deep.  Keep asking yourself, “and why is that important to me?”

You will know you have reached your “why” when you feel it in your heart or in your gut.  It feels personal and emotional.  Knowing your why is a VERY POWERFUL TOOL to help you quit smoking once and for all!

TOP 5 TIPS!

  1. Know your “WHY”
  2. Make a list of all the activities you do in a day and identify the ones that you cannot imagine doing without smoking a cigarette.  Once you have a list start bringing in alternatives to smoking so that you can practice being a nonsmoker during that activity.
  3. Now that you’re having some experience practicing being a nonsmoker for spans of time during certain activities, let’s expand it.  Begin to think about what it would be like to be a permanent nonsmoker.  Someone who never uses cigarettes to cope with life.
  4. Begin to spend time every morning before you get out of bed and every evening before you fall asleep visualizing the nonsmoker you.  Do this for a minimum of 10 minutes morning and night.
  5. Breathe.   Begin smoking your cigarettes … except without the cigarette.  It’s the breathing that actually brings you calmness and helps you feel relaxed.  So smoke the cigarette … just without the actual cigarette in your hand.  Do this every time you think you want a butt.

Smoking-to-Quit is about practicing each aspect of being a nonsmoker before you actually set the final quit date.   This is a very effective way to prepare yourself for living life without cigarettes, vaping or whatever nicotine habit you have.

Key Points in Smoking-to-Quit:

  • Begin by changing up whatever you can about your habit such as …
    • changing brands of cigarettes
    • changing the location in which you smoke
    • switch hands so you are smoking with the opposite hand
    • Give up the top 3 most compelling times that you smoke … simply delay that cigarette by at least an hour
    • Alter the locations in which you smoke so they are different from where you smoke now
    • Make smoking a cumbersome task rather than a process you enjoy
    • Identify alternative activities to smoking so that on your QUIT day you know and have practiced exactly what you will do
